Express State-to-State Moves

Sometimes express interstate moving is a better solution for people moving coast-to-coast and far away.  We handle all loading and unloading in NC. We partner with another moving company we have a relationship with at the other end of the country (CA, west coast, southwest, Rockies, etc).  This process holds down costs (overtime, travel, lodging and meal expenses, etc).  You should always feel like you are doing business with Truckin’ Movers and we are always the ones accountable for your satisfaction!  Find Out more…

Guaranteed Delivery Dates for Interstate Moving

Did you know we give exact dates on out-of-state moving? It’s unbelievable when compared to other interstate movers, but it’s true. No matter how large or small your shipment, we let you set an exact date for the pickup and an exact date for the delivery within the continental United States!

What Makes Out-of-State Moves Different Than In-State Moves?

There are major differences between in-state moves and Interstate (state-to-state) moves.  In-state moves are usually done by the same moving company, whether you are moving a one bedroom apartment across the street or a 5 bedroom estate across the entire state. Delivery to the destination is usually same day/next day, and if there is a problem, the company bound to your state laws.

Interstate moves can take several days to over a week (depending on location and move method), and delivery dates are often ambiguous. Additionally, there is a good  likelihood that the movers at your new home could be local to your new city and a part of a network of movers that work together to increase efficiency and hold down costs. If the movers you use don’t deliver your contents to your new home or damage contents without honoring the proper claim process, you could have a serious problem.

Always Choose A Mover With a Federal DOT License For Out-of-State Moves

There are 2 legal ways to move across state lines:  hire a federally licensed interstate mover or do it yourself with friends.  While many moving companies are willing to cross state lines without a federal DOT license, it’s against federal law and takes away all the safety shields you have as the consumer.

Local moves are regulated by your state. Many states don’t require movers to regulated any more than a delivery service.  To find our about your state’s requirements, click here.  When your move crosses state lines, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates the move through their agency,  Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).   Interstate moves have extensive rules and regulations to ensure consistency in all 50 states.

1. Tariff

Movers must have  published tariffs, or rate structures that include:

  1. Binding and non-binding estimates (guaranteed final price vs best guess of final price).
  2. A bill of lading- an inventory of large items and number of boxes to be moved.  Valuable items must be declared separately to protect the value in casseof claim.
  3. Wrap/protect contents for move (blankets, bubble wrap, etc)
  4. Loading and unloading at the sender’s origin and destination residences

2. Movers Must Provide Reasonable Dispatch

The moving industry term  ‘Reasonable Dispatch’  has to do with the movement of goods within the dates or period agreed upon and shown on the bill of lading between you and the mover. There may be exceptions provided for under the mover’s published tariff or factors such as Force Majeure as defined by the courts.

3. They Are Legally Liable

A DOT licensed interstate moving company is legally liable for losses incurred moving the contents listed in the bill of lading for that specific move. Household goods that are damaged or not delivered to the destination, are covered by full value protection obligation. Generally, this means the mover is liable for the replacement value of those household goods. Interstate movers must disclose the limits of their liability in an easily understood manner.

4. Movers Must Have Honest Advertising

DOT licensed interstate movers must be honest and straightforward in all advertisements. The company’s official operating business or trade name must be used as it appears on federal documentation that assigns the U.S. DOT Number. The format is U.S. DOT No. (assigned number). For example, you will see our U.S. DOT number (along with several others) prominently displayed at the bottom of each of our web pages.

5. Each Mover Must Have a Claim Process

Each mover must have an established complaint and inquiry process with three basic components:

  1. A contact phone number
  2. A system for allowing a move customer to directly contact and communicate with the mover’s primary place of business.
  3. A system for recording all inquiries and complaints.

Also, the mover must have a written process for inquiries and complaints.

There are many other requirements and regulations, but these 5 make the largest difference to someone moving out-of-state.

Moves within North Carolina are billed by man-hour.  If it takes four men five hours to move you, we charge 20 hours. Interstate moves must be charged per mile and by weight of the content.  We are required to file our rates and tariffs with the federal government and maintain consistency of rates for everyone.

Often, moving to a different state includes complicated requirements.   Here are just a few of the options Truckin’ Movers can offer:

  • Pack-and Store: W_If you need a couple extra days or weeks between moving out of your old home and into your new home, we have solutions. We will pack your contents into containers, storing them in one of our our tractor trailers in our secured lot, until you need them to arrive at their destination.  If you need lobnger than that, we will usually move the containers into one of our warehouses.
  • Containerized Moving:  We pack your contents in our company containers.  This is very efficient, and allows us flexibility including shipping, split storage, split destinations, and many other options, all while only touching your contents once.
  • LTL Carriers:  By using containerize packing, our team can easily pack (and unpack) your contents on another semi hauling less than a full truckload.
  • Private Moving Partners: Sometimes it is more efficient to use one of our partner moving company relationships that we have developed over the past 40 years.  We can pack your items into our containers, ship them to your new destination, and have them unload/unpack, saving you hundreds, possibly thousands in moving expenses.
