Doug Carlton

Doug Carlton, founder and President of Truckin’ Movers, revolutionized the moving industry through his commitment to free enterprise and consumer advocacy. After graduating from Duke University in 1976 with a double major in economics and political science, Doug drew upon his experience working as a mover during his high school and college summers to identify a crucial need in the market: affordable, unregulated moving services.

In October 1976, with just $300 and an innovative concept, Doug co-founded Truckin’ Movers. His groundbreaking approach circumvented the heavily regulated moving industry by having customers drive rental trucks while his crews handled all other aspects of the move. This creative solution challenged the status quo of artificially high prices and limited competition. Despite facing significant opposition, including investigations by the ICC, IRS audits, and a federal lawsuit from major moving companies, Doug’s persistence paid off. In 1982, after a nine-month legal battle in Washington, DC, Truckin’ Movers won a landmark case that helped pave the way for industry deregulation. The ICC granted the company a license to operate in all 48 contiguous states and set its own rates, marking a significant victory for free enterprise in the moving industry.

Today, over four decades later, Doug remains actively involved in the company’s daily operations and is a dedicated member of BNI (Business Network International), where he continues to build strong relationships within the local business community. His pioneering spirit and dedication to customer service have transformed what began as a small startup into a respected leader in the moving industry.

Brad Cave

Brad Cave brings over 16 years of hands-on moving experience to his dual role as salesperson and operations manager at Truckin’ Movers. Starting his career as a mover himself, Brad worked his way up through every aspect of the business, giving him unparalleled insight into what makes a successful move tick. His expertise particularly shines in complex interstate and international relocations, where his thorough understanding of logistics and regulations helps customers navigate even the most challenging moves with confidence. Having personally handled thousands of moves throughout his career, Brad’s practical experience enables him to anticipate and solve problems before they arise, ensuring smooth transitions for our clients.

When he’s not coordinating cross-country moves or advising clients, Brad maintains an impressive year-round home garden. His knowledge of soil composition, seasonal planting, and organic growing techniques mirrors the attention to detail he brings to every moving project. Brad also brings his competitive spirit to the community softball league, where he plays to support local charities, demonstrating his commitment to giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his career. This combination of extensive industry experience and active community involvement makes Brad a trusted resource for customers planning their next big move, whether it’s across the state or across the ocean.

Jeff Philips

Jeff Phillips is a cornerstone of our sales team, helping customers navigate their moving needs with practical solutions and straight talk. His ability to break down complex moves into manageable steps has earned him a reputation as one of our most reliable advisors. Whether coordinating a simple local move or orchestrating a multi-state relocation, Jeff’s approach combines efficiency with clear communication, ensuring clients know exactly what to expect throughout their moving process.

A fixture in the Pittsboro business community, Jeff founded and runs the Wakeup Wednesday monthly networking meeting, which has grown into one of the area’s most active networking organizations. The monthly gatherings regularly draw dozens of local entrepreneurs and professionals, creating valuable connections throughout the region. His deep involvement in the local business scene gives him unique insights into the area’s growth and development, knowledge that proves invaluable when advising clients on their relocations. When he’s not at the office or running business events, Jeff maintains a productive home garden and manages a small flock of chickens, proving he can handle both business logistics and agricultural operations with equal skill. His hands-on approach to both his professional and personal projects reflects the practical, results-driven attitude he brings to every moving project he oversees.

FINANCE

Robin Shirey

Robin Shirey has been the steady hand managing Truckin’ Movers’ finances for over 25 years, bringing precision and reliability to every aspect of our billing operations. As Finance Manager, she ensures smooth financial transactions for customers while maintaining the company’s robust accounting systems. Her extensive experience in the moving industry allows her to guide customers through the billing process with clarity and confidence, making even complex interstate moves financially straightforward.

Beyond her role managing accounts, Robin serves as a valuable resource for customers following up after their moves, helping to resolve any questions or concerns with efficiency and care. Her attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction reflect the company’s core values of providing exceptional service at every stage of the moving process. When not balancing books or assisting customers, Robin maintains an impressive organic garden and tends to her flock of chickens, bringing the same level of dedication to her home projects as she does to her professional responsibilities. Recently, Robin added another adventure to her list of accomplishments when she traveled to Alaska and experienced dog sledding firsthand, proving she’s as comfortable navigating snowy trails as she is navigating financial spreadsheets. Her diverse interests and steady professionalism make her an invaluable member of the Truckin’ Movers team.

Office Manager

Jenn Nelson

Jenn Nelson brings a wealth of customer service expertise to her role as Office Manager at Truckin’ Movers, where her natural talent for organization and coordination keeps our operations running like clockwork. With an extensive background in customer service, Jenn has mastered the art of balancing multiple priorities while maintaining the personal touch that makes each customer and employee feel valued and heard.

As the backbone of our office operations, Jenn orchestrates the countless behind-the-scenes details that transform a simple moving request into a seamlessly executed relocation. Her ability to anticipate needs and solve problems before they arise ensures that both our team members and customers receive the support they need when they need it. Whether she’s coordinating schedules, managing office resources, or providing guidance to staff, Jenn’s dedication to excellence shines through in everything she does.

Away from the office, Jenn’s nurturing spirit extends to her role as a proud mom and devoted pet parent to her two rescue dogs, Max and Amber. Her passion for helping others flourishes in her free time through dog training, where she applies the same patience and attention to detail that makes her so effective in the office. When she’s not working with her four-legged friends, Jenn can be found tending to her garden or pursuing her creative interests in hairdressing. This combination of professional expertise and personal passions makes Jenn an invaluable member of our Truckin’ Movers family.

Fleet and IT

Tom Truesdale

Tom Truesdale brings a unique blend of technical expertise and operational knowledge to his dual role as Fleet Manager and IT Administrator at Truckin’ Movers. For over four years, he has been the driving force behind keeping our fleet in prime condition while simultaneously managing our proprietary moving software system. His attention to detail ensures that both our vehicles and digital infrastructure operate at peak efficiency, providing seamless service to our customers.

As Fleet Manager, Tom oversees the maintenance and optimization of our entire vehicle fleet, implementing preventive maintenance schedules and managing repairs to keep our trucks reliable and road-ready. On the IT side, his technical acumen shines through in the maintenance and enhancement of our custom moving software, which streamlines operations and improves customer service.

When he’s not managing trucks or troubleshooting software, Tom pursues an equally dynamic set of personal interests. An avid free-diver, he explores the depths with the same precision he brings to his technical work. His passion for photography allows him to capture the beauty he encounters both above and below the water’s surface. As a proud tech nerd, he builds custom PCs and servers, and is learning software development, constantly expanding his technical knowledge that benefits both his professional and personal pursuits.
