Solar-Powered Durham, NC Headquarters
Our solar-powered Durham, NC headquarters forms the foundation of our green approach and routinely generates more power than we need on a daily basis that we give back to the grid. Solar power produces no air pollution and using more solar power will clean up North Carolina’s air, reducing emergency room visits, childhood asthma, and deaths from lung disease. By the year 2030, if solar energy supplies 14% of North Carolina’s electricity supply, it would prevent 10 million metric tons of global warming carbon dioxide pollution–the same amount as produced by 680,000 cars and trucks in a year. Installing one megawatt of solar power creates nine times as many jobs as installing one megawatt of coal or gas power. For more information, visit Environment North Carolina.
When you store your valuables in the Truckin’ Movers storage warehouse in Durham, NC, you are doing so with the smallest carbon footprint possible. That’s because our warehouse is climate controlled by design. No massive HVAC included. Our warehouse is built to maintain a steady temperature year-round without the need for additional heating and cooling. The green-design began with selecting the right site location. The warehouse sits at the top of a hill. This allows for the most important feature given the North Carolina humidity: air flow and is enforced with a raised floor—about 2-4′ above the ground, given the hill’s slope. Further, by storing valuables in our unique wooden containers, and placing them on pallets, they aren’t only easy to move around, we give each container and extra 6″ of air flow underneath. The overall impact is that on multiple levels, your belongings are stored high and dry. The roof has an extra 10″ of insulating materials and the concrete blocks that form the walls are also filled with extra insulation. So the heat and the cold stay out.
Over the decades, we have pioneered express moving, a green moving approach designed to minimize deadheading–driving empty trucks long distances. As container moving experts, we are able to take advantage of our highly developed network of partnerships with other carriers to significantly increase efficiency in long distance moving. Our green moving partner carriers provide semi-trailers for our moves, but only charge for the amount of space used. By optimizing the efficiency of fuel-burning miles, Truckin’ Movers helps to reduce overall greenhouse emissions.

We will also buy back packing boxes from our customers to make sure they are properly recycled. We are active recyclers of everything from old electronics to cardboard–working with local partners such as Shimar Recycling and Triangle E-cycling. And last, but not least, no green business would be complete without a food compost program for its employees! In this endeavor, our sales consultant, Brad Cave, has partnered with Durham-based Hombucha who turns employee food scraps into compost for use in their gardens.
