Long-Distance Moving from NC: What to Expect and Cost

Cost GuidesJuly 6, 2026·7 min read·By Truckin' Movers·Updated July 6, 2026

In 1982, the ICC granted us authority to move households across all 48 contiguous states. We've been doing long-distance relocations from North Carolina ever since. Costs typically run $1,500 to $12,000+ depending on where you're headed, how much you own, and what services you need. Here's what the process actually looks like, from pricing to delivery day.

Cost Estimates by Destination from Durham, NC

These estimates are for a standard three-bedroom household (roughly 7,500 pounds) moving from Durham. Your actual number depends on volume, services, and time of year.

Destination Approximate Distance Estimated Cost Range Typical Transit Time
Charlotte, NC 140 miles $1,500 – $3,500 1–2 days
Asheville, NC 250 miles $2,000 – $4,500 1–3 days
Washington, DC 280 miles $2,500 – $5,500 2–4 days
New York City 500 miles $3,500 – $7,500 3–7 days
Atlanta, GA 400 miles $3,000 – $6,500 2–5 days
Miami, FL 750 miles $4,000 – $8,500 4–8 days
Chicago, IL 800 miles $4,500 – $9,000 4–8 days
Los Angeles, CA 2,500 miles $6,500 – $12,000+ 10–14 days

How Long-Distance Moving Pricing Works

Local moves charge by the hour. Long-distance moves charge by weight and distance. The moving company weighs your shipment at a certified scale (or estimates it from a cube sheet) and applies a tariff rate based on the origin-destination pair. Packing, special handling, and delivery conditions get added on top.

This is why an in-home estimate matters so much for long-distance moves. A phone estimate based on "a three-bedroom house" can be off by thousands. Actual weight varies enormously based on furniture density, how many books you own, and whether the garage is full of tools or mostly empty.

Binding vs Non-Binding Estimates

For interstate moves, always ask for a binding not-to-exceed estimate. That's what we provide. It caps your maximum cost at the estimated amount but lets the final bill come in lower if your shipment weighs less. Non-binding estimates for interstate moves are risky because the final number can jump well past the quote, and by then your stuff is already on the truck.

Timeline Expectations

Long-distance moves have more moving parts than local ones. Here's a general timeline:

  1. 6 to 8 weeks before: Get estimates, compare companies, and book your mover. For long-distance moves from NC, early booking is essential.
  2. 4 weeks before: Confirm dates and start packing non-essentials.
  3. 1 to 2 weeks before: Finish packing. Confirm the delivery window with your mover.
  4. Loading day: The crew loads your belongings. You'll sign an inventory sheet (bill of lading) documenting every item and its condition.
  5. Transit: Your shipment is on the road. Dedicated (exclusive) trucks arrive faster but cost more. Consolidated (shared) loads are cheaper but take longer.
  6. Delivery day: The crew delivers and unloads. Inspect everything and note any damage on the delivery receipt.

Insurance and Valuation Coverage

Federal regulations require interstate movers to offer two levels of coverage:

  • Released value protection: Included at no extra charge. Covers $0.60 per pound per article. A 50-pound TV broken during the move would pay out $30. That's obviously not enough for a $1,500 television.
  • Full value protection: The mover must repair, replace, or reimburse at current market value. This costs extra, typically 1 to 2% of your declared shipment value. We strongly recommend it for any interstate move.

You can also buy third-party moving insurance from companies that specialize in transit coverage. It adds another layer of protection for high-value items.

What to Expect on Loading Day

The crew arrives with the truck, blankets, tools, and stretch wrap. They'll walk through your home with you to review the inventory and flag anything that needs special handling. Every box and piece of furniture gets a numbered sticker that matches the inventory list. This list is your primary tool for identifying lost or damaged items later, so review it carefully and note any pre-existing damage before the truck rolls.

Loading a three-bedroom home typically takes 4 to 7 hours. Be there for the entire process and for the final walkthrough of the empty house. Don't leave until you've checked every room, closet, and cabinet.

What to Expect on Delivery Day

The delivery crew may be different from the loading crew on long-distance moves. They'll contact you with a delivery window, typically 24 to 48 hours in advance. At Truckin' Movers, we give you Exact Moving Dates. That's a specific delivery date, not a vague window.

On arrival, the crew unloads and places furniture and boxes where you direct. Check each numbered item against the inventory as it comes off the truck. Note any damage or missing items on the delivery receipt before you sign. You have 9 months from delivery to file a claim for interstate moves. Don't wait. Document issues immediately.

Tips for a Smooth Long-Distance Move

  • Declutter before you weigh. Every pound you cut saves money on a weight-based move.
  • Keep essentials with you. Pack a suitcase with clothing, toiletries, medications, chargers, and important documents. You may be without your shipment for several days.
  • Ship or transport valuables separately. Jewelry, cash, important papers, and irreplaceable items shouldn't go on the truck.
  • Photograph everything. Before loading, photograph valuable furniture and electronics. It's evidence for any claims.
  • Confirm delivery logistics. Make sure there's adequate parking for a large truck at your new address. If not, ask about shuttle service (a smaller truck to ferry belongings the last stretch).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the cost of a long-distance move calculated?

Weight and distance are the two main factors. Packing services, special handling, delivery conditions (stairs, long carries), and seasonal demand layer on top. We provide a binding estimate after an in-home survey so the final number doesn't surprise you.

Can I track my shipment during a long-distance move?

We keep you updated when your shipment is loaded, in transit, and approaching delivery. Ask any mover about their tracking and communication process before booking. At minimum, you should get updates at those three checkpoints.

What happens if my delivery is late?

You may be entitled to delay compensation depending on your contract and the mover's tariff. Federal regulations require reasonable delivery windows and proactive communication about delays. Keep records of all dates and communications. That said, our Exact Moving Dates pillar means we commit to a date and stick to it.

Should I get a dedicated truck or a consolidated shipment?

A dedicated truck means you're the only shipment on the vehicle. Faster delivery, less handling. A consolidated shipment shares space with other customers. Cheaper but slower, with more loading and unloading. For big households or time-sensitive moves, dedicated is worth the premium.

What items cannot be transported on a long-distance move?

Hazardous materials (gasoline, propane, paint, chemicals), perishable food, live plants (agricultural regulations), pets, and ammunition all stay off the truck. Medications, jewelry, and important documents should travel with you for safety and access.
