Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move
Federal law requires interstate movers to hand you two documents from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) before your move. We give both to every long-distance customer along with the written estimate. They're posted here so you can read them anytime, before you ever pick up the phone.
The Two FMCSA Documents
- Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move (PDF, hosted by FMCSA). The booklet that spells out what your mover must do, how estimates and weights work, your options for valuation and insurance, and how to file a claim or complaint.
- Ready to Move? Tips for a Successful Interstate Move (PDF, hosted by FMCSA). A short brochure on planning your move and avoiding the common traps.
These links point to the current versions on FMCSA's own site, so you're always reading the latest edition. You can also find them and verify any mover at FMCSA's Protect Your Move page.
When These Apply
These FMCSA rules cover moves that cross state lines, like Durham to Atlanta or North Carolina to Texas. For moves that stay inside North Carolina, the North Carolina Utilities Commission regulates the work instead, and we follow those rules too. Either way, you're entitled to a clear written estimate and an honest accounting of the charges.
How to Check Any Mover
Before you hire anyone for an interstate move, confirm they're registered with FMCSA and carry the right insurance. Look them up by USDOT number at protectyourmove.gov or call FMCSA at 1-800-832-5660. Here are our numbers so you can check us:
- USDOT #0233952
- FMCSA #MC159007
- NCUC #C-2262
