500 Miles from the City That Never Sleeps
Five hundred miles on I-95 South. In a loaded truck, that's about a day and a half of driving. We've done this route so many times we could probably do it blindfolded, but we don't recommend that.
The New York end is where things get interesting. Every borough has its own logistics. Brooklyn walkups mean carrying furniture down narrow stairwells with tight landings. Upper West Side co-ops usually need a certificate of insurance filed with the management company two weeks ahead of time. Jersey City high-rises have loading docks, but you've got to reserve your time slot or you're waiting in a line of trucks. Manhattan buildings often restrict moves to specific hours and specific elevators.
We handle all of it. COI paperwork, freight elevator reservations, loading dock scheduling, street parking permits. If your building has rules, we've probably already dealt with that building or one just like it. You tell us the address, and we'll figure out the logistics before we show up.
What You'll Find in Durham
People keep making this move, and we get it. A one-bedroom in Brooklyn that costs $2,800 a month rents for $1,200 in Durham. Or you skip renting entirely and buy a house with a yard for less than your NYC rent. That math is hard to argue with.
Durham's got neighborhoods for every speed. Trinity Park and Old West Durham have walkable streets with big trees and old homes. Hope Valley has ranch houses with actual driveways. Downtown has lofts in converted tobacco warehouses if you want the urban feel without the NYC price tag. If you're working in tech or biotech, Research Triangle Park is 15 minutes away. Duke University and Duke Health are the biggest employers in the area, and the food scene here punches way above its weight.
The pace is different. That takes some getting used to. But most New York transplants we move tell us the same thing after six months: they don't miss it as much as they thought they would.
How the Process Works
You call us at (919) 682-2300 or fill out the form on this page. We'll do a virtual walkthrough or send someone to your apartment if you're local to NYC. We look at what you're moving, what floor you're on, what the building access situation looks like, and give you a straight price. No surprises on move day.
On the day, our crew shows up at your building with all the materials. We pack if you want us to, or we load what you've already packed. Everything goes into a container. That container gets sealed and doesn't open again until we're in your new place in Durham. One touch. Less handling, less risk.
Transit takes about a day and a half. We give you an exact delivery date. You'll know exactly when to be at your new place with the keys ready.
Why Truckin' Movers for This Route
We've been in Durham since 1976. We've moved over 20,000 families. Our average crew member has been with us for over a decade. That's not a recruiting slogan. It means the people unloading your truck in Durham have done this thousands of times before.
We know the Durham end cold. We know which downtown buildings need elevator reservations. We know the tight turns on Watts Street. We know that the freight elevator at American Tobacco fits a full-size couch, barely. When you're moving 500 miles from a city where everything is complicated, it helps to land somewhere with a crew that already has it figured out.
We give you exact dates. We use a containerized system so your stuff gets loaded once and unloaded once. And we've been doing this long enough that there aren't many surprises left. That's the job. Give us a call and let's get you to Durham.
