Up I-95 to the Triangle
The distance depends on where you're starting. Jacksonville is about 500 miles, mostly I-95 North. Orlando is 650 miles. Tampa is roughly the same but on a different route through I-75 to I-77. Miami is 850 miles and takes two full days in a loaded truck. We run all of these routes regularly.
Florida moves have their own considerations. Humidity is the big one. If you've been storing furniture in a garage or an un-air-conditioned space, moisture can be trapped in upholstery and wood. We pack with that in mind, using moisture-resistant materials and making sure nothing is sealed up wet. Florida also means dealing with gated communities, HOA move-out rules, and the occasional condo building that restricts moving to weekdays only.
We see a lot of variety on this route. Retirement downsizes from The Villages. Young families leaving Orlando for better schools. Professionals trading Tampa traffic for the Triangle's job market. Snowbirds who decided to make North Carolina the permanent home. Each move is different, and we plan accordingly.
What You'll Find in Durham
If you're coming from Florida, the first thing you'll notice is the seasons. Durham actually has four of them. Fall is spectacular. Winter is real but manageable. Spring starts in March. And summer is warm, but it's not Florida warm. The humidity drops by July in a way that never happens in Tampa or Miami.
A lot of Florida-to-Durham movers are coming to be closer to family, and the Triangle makes that work. Duke Health and UNC Hospitals are world-class medical systems. Durham's cost of living is reasonable. And if you're used to Florida's lack of state income tax, North Carolina's rate is a flat 4.5%, which still beats most states.
For retirees, Durham's got walkable neighborhoods, a strong arts scene, and enough good restaurants to keep you busy for years. For families, the school districts are solid and RTP keeps the job market healthy. Neighborhoods like Hope Valley, Woodcroft, and Southpoint are popular with families. Downtown and Old West Durham draw younger residents and empty-nesters who want walkability.
How the Process Works
Call us at (919) 682-2300 or fill out the form on this page. We'll do a virtual survey of your Florida home. We look at volume, building access, any HOA rules, and the drive distance. Then we give you one price. That's it.
On move day, our crew arrives with packing materials, furniture pads, and a truck sized for your load. We can do full packing, partial packing, or just load what you've already boxed up. Everything goes into a sealed container. One load in Florida, one unload in Durham. If your timing doesn't line up perfectly, we store your container in our climate-controlled facility until you're ready.
We give you an exact delivery date. Not "sometime this week." A specific day. That's been the standard here since 1976.
Why Truckin' Movers for This Route
We've been in Durham since 1976, and we've moved over 20,000 families. Our crew members aren't seasonal labor. They're career employees with over a decade of experience on average. The people bringing your belongings into your new Durham home have done this thousands of times before.
When your truck arrives from Florida, our crew knows exactly where they're going. Every Durham apartment complex, every downtown building, every residential neighborhood. We know the parking restrictions in Old West Durham, the freight elevator situation at every major complex, and which driveways in Hope Valley can handle a 26-foot truck. That's what 49 years in one city gets you.
You're making a big move. We'll come to Florida, load you up, and bring you home to Durham. Give us a call.
