Storage and Moving in Durham, NC

One company, one container, no double handling. Climate-controlled storage from $75/mo.

Moving and Storage from One Company

Most people don't plan on needing storage during a move. Then the closing dates don't line up, the renovation runs long, or the new place isn't ready yet. Suddenly you need somewhere to put everything for a few weeks or a few months.

Here's the problem with using separate companies for moving and storage: your movers unload everything into a storage unit, and when you're ready, a different crew loads it all onto a different truck. That's four handling events. Four chances for something to get scratched, lost, or broken.

Truckin' Movers does both. We load your belongings into a container at your home, store the sealed container in our Durham warehouse, and deliver the same container to your new place when you're ready. Two handling events total. One load, one unload. That's what we call one-touch handling, and it's been our system since the beginning.

How One-Touch Containerized Storage Works

Doug Carlton designed our containerized system in the early days of Truckin' Movers because he saw how much damage happened when items got handled multiple times. The concept is simple:

Step 1: Loading at your home. Our crew packs and loads your belongings into containers, the same way they would for any move. Everything is pad-wrapped and secured inside the container. The container is sealed.

Step 2: Transport to our warehouse. The sealed containers go to our Durham facility at 1031 Harvest Rd. Indoor warehouse containers sit in a climate-controlled environment. Your items stay at a consistent temperature and humidity.

Step 3: Storage.Your container sits untouched for as long as you need. A week, a month, a year. Nobody opens it, nobody reorganizes it, nobody stacks other people's boxes on top. Your stuff stays exactly where the crew put it.

Step 4: Delivery to your new home. When you're ready, call us and we'll schedule an exact delivery date. The same container comes out of the warehouse and goes straight to your door. Same container, same contents. The crew unloads and places everything where you want it.

Compare that to the industry standard: your truck gets unloaded at a warehouse, items go on shelves or pallets, and weeks later a different crew loads everything onto a different truck. More handling, more risk, more confusion about where things ended up.

Storage in Transit: Bridging the Gap

The most common reason people need storage during a move is a gap between homes. You sold your house but the new one doesn't close for three weeks. Or you're relocating to Durham from out of state and haven't found a place yet. That's storage in transit (SIT).

With our system, SIT is simple. We load your belongings at your old home, store the container at our warehouse, and deliver when your new place is ready. The storage period is typically a few weeks to a few months. Delivery after storage is part of your original move contract, so there's no separate move to schedule.

For long-distance moves, SIT is especially valuable. We give exact delivery dates, so your container arrives when you're ready, not before. If your new place isn't ready on the original delivery date, the container stays in our warehouse until it is.

Storage Options and Pricing

Storage with Truckin' Movers runs $75 to $300 per month. No long-term contracts, and the first and last months are prorated. Here's what we offer:

Climate-controlled warehouse containers.Medium containers are 5×7×7.5 feet. Large containers are 5×8×8.5 feet. These sit inside our Durham warehouse and are best for furniture, electronics, artwork, and anything sensitive to heat or humidity.

Outdoor storage units.Available on our Durham property for items that don't need climate control. Seasonal equipment, extra furniture, boxes of non-sensitive goods.

Semi-trailer storage. For large loads that need more space. Trailers range from 24 to 53 feet. Good for whole-house storage during a renovation or extended gap between homes.

For the moving side, local moves run $700 to $6,000+ depending on home size. A 2-person crew starts at $165 to $195 per hour. The bundle value of using one company for both moving and storage is real: one contract, one crew, one schedule, and your belongings never leave the container between pickup and delivery.

Common Scenarios for Combined Storage and Moving

Sold your house before the new one closes. This is the most common gap. You need to be out in two weeks but can't move into the new place for another month. We load everything up, store it, and deliver when you get the keys.

Downsizing and sorting. You're moving from a 4-bedroom house to a 2-bedroom condo and haven't decided what to keep yet. We move everything into storage, and you can access your container by appointment to sort through things at your own pace.

Renovation storage. You're gutting the kitchen or adding a second floor. The furniture needs to go somewhere for a few months. We pick it up, store it, and bring it back when the contractor is done.

Seasonal storage.Holiday decorations, outdoor furniture, sports equipment. If it's taking up space in your garage, we'll store it and deliver when you need it again.

Relocating to Durham from out of state. You haven't found a home yet but need to leave your current one. We pick up on your schedule, store in Durham, and deliver when you're settled. Your belongings are here waiting for you.

Storage and Moving FAQs

When one company handles both, your belongings get loaded into a container once at your home and unloaded once at your destination. No reloading at a warehouse, no transferring between trucks. Fewer hands on your stuff means less chance of damage. It also means one point of contact, one invoice, and one schedule to manage.
Storage runs $75 to $300 per month depending on how much space you need. We bill monthly with a one-month minimum. The first and last months are prorated, so you only pay for the days you use. No long-term contracts. Call (919) 682-2300 for a quote based on your load size.
Your belongings are packed into a container at your home, the container goes to our warehouse, and when you're ready, the same container goes to your new place. Your stuff is only handled twice: loading and unloading. Most moving companies unload your truck into a warehouse, stack everything on shelves, then reload onto a different truck later. That's four handling events instead of two.
As long as you need. We have customers storing for a few weeks between closings and others who've been with us for years. Month-to-month, no long-term contracts required. Your container stays sealed the entire time.
Our indoor warehouse containers are climate-controlled to protect furniture, electronics, artwork, and anything sensitive to temperature and humidity. We also have outdoor units and semi-trailer storage for items that don't need climate control. We'll help you pick the right option.
You can access your container by appointment. Call ahead and we'll have it ready when you arrive. Depending on container type, there may be a warehouse handling charge and a one-hour minimum labor fee. It's not a self-storage unit you walk into, but that's what keeps your stuff secure and organized.
