270 Miles South on I-85
Two hundred seventy miles on I-85 South. In a loaded truck, that's a solid day of driving. This is one of the most common routes we run. Government workers, nonprofit staff, defense contractors, and federal employees make this move constantly, and we've been on the receiving end since 1976.
The DC end has its own logistics. Arlington high-rises usually have loading docks and freight elevators, but you need to reserve your slot well ahead of time. Georgetown rowhouses mean narrow streets, tight doorways, and street parking that requires a permit from DDOT. Bethesda and Silver Spring condos vary building to building. Some have dedicated moving elevators. Others make you share with residents during off-peak hours only.
We deal with all of it. COI paperwork, elevator scheduling, parking coordination. You give us your address, and we'll sort out the building requirements before move day.
What You'll Find in Durham
If you're leaving government or contractor work for something in RTP, you're in good company. Research Triangle Park sits right between Durham and Raleigh, and it's home to over 300 companies in biotech, tech, and research. Duke University and Duke Health are Durham's largest employers. The job market here is strong and getting stronger.
The cost of living difference is real. A two-bedroom apartment in Arlington that runs $2,500 a month goes for $1,300 in Durham. Or you buy a house. Neighborhoods near Duke like Trinity Park and Watts-Hillandale have older homes with character and big yards. Hope Valley and Southpoint are more suburban. Downtown Durham has lofts and new construction if you want to walk to restaurants and coffee shops.
Durham's got a different energy than DC. Less hustle, more community. The food scene is nationally recognized. The farmers market is one of the best in the state. And you're 2.5 hours from the mountains and 2.5 hours from the beach.
How the Process Works
Call us at (919) 682-2300 or request a quote through this page. We'll do a virtual survey of your place or schedule an in-person walkthrough. We look at what you're moving, what floor you're on, what kind of building access you have, and give you a firm price. No ranges, no surprises.
On move day, our crew arrives at your DC-area home with everything needed. Packing materials, furniture pads, the right truck for your building's dock. Everything gets loaded into a sealed container. That container doesn't open again until we're in your new Durham home. One load, one unload. That's our containerized system, and it's how we keep damage rates near zero.
Transit is one day. We give you an exact delivery date. You know when to have the keys ready and the coffee on.
Why Truckin' Movers for This Route
We've been in Durham since 1976. Over 20,000 families moved. Our average crew member has been with us more than ten years. When your truck rolls into Durham, the people unloading it know every building, every neighborhood, every parking situation in this city.
That matters more than you'd think. We know that the loading dock at your new Brightleaf Square apartment has a weight limit. We know the turns on Watts Street are tight for a 26-footer. We know which downtown buildings need elevator reservations a week out and which ones you can walk into same-day. That's home court knowledge, and it's what you get when your movers have been working the same city for 49 years.
Exact dates. Career crews. Containerized moves. Give us a call and let's bring you to Durham.
