Coast to Coast. 2,550 Miles on I-40.
Durham to Los Angeles is one of the longest moves we run. Twenty-five hundred fifty miles, mostly on I-40 West, across eight states: North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into California. In a loaded moving truck doing the legal speed with mandatory rest stops, that's about a week on the road. We load in Durham and deliver in LA 7-10 days later.
We've been making cross-country moves since we won our federal license in 1982, after taking on the ICC and winning. That fight gave us the authority to move families to any state in the lower 48. We've been using it ever since.
How We Handle a Cross-Country Load
A 2,550-mile move demands careful loading. The crew spends time getting it right. Every piece of furniture is wrapped, padded, and strapped for a week on the highway through mountains, desert, and city traffic. The truck crosses the Appalachian foothills, the flat plains of Oklahoma and Texas, the desert heat of Arizona, and the mountain passes into the LA basin. Your stuff needs to ride tight the entire way.
This is where our one-touch containerized approach really proves its value. Your belongings get loaded once in Durham and unloaded once in LA. No transfer warehouses in Memphis or Albuquerque. No switching trucks. The same container, on the same vehicle, from your old door to your new one.
Landing in Los Angeles
LA is a different world for delivery logistics. West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Silver Lake all have street parking challenges and often require LADOT no-parking permits. Downtown DTLA lofts and high-rises have loading docks and freight elevators with time slots. The Valley neighborhoods, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Burbank, are more standard residential with driveway access. South Bay, Long Beach, and Pasadena each have their own parking situations.
We need to know your specific building or address to plan the delivery right. Building coordination, permits, and elevator reservations all get handled before the truck leaves Durham.
What You'll Pay and When You'll Get Your Stuff
Durham to Los Angeles runs $6,500 to $15,000 for a 2-3 bedroom home. Weight is the biggest factor on a coast-to-coast move. We give you exact dates for pickup and delivery. If your LA place isn't ready when we are, your belongings wait in a sealed container at our Durham warehouse. No rush, no extra handling.
