250 Miles Through the Mountains. We've Done It Hundreds of Times.
Raleigh to Asheville is 250 miles on I-40 West, and the last 60 miles are through the Blue Ridge Mountains. From Raleigh, you roll through Durham, Greensboro, and Hickory on flat ground. Then the road starts climbing past Morganton, through the Old Fort gorge, and up to Asheville at about 2,200 feet. In a car it's under 4 hours. In a loaded moving truck, closer to 5 hours because the mountain grades demand slower speeds and careful braking.
Our drivers have been running loaded trucks through the Blue Ridge since before the I-40 mountain section was widened. They know the grades, the truck stops, and the weather patterns that matter.
Picking Up in Raleigh
We drive from our Durham base to your Raleigh address and arrive at the set time. Downtown apartment, house in Five Points, subdivision in North Raleigh. We've loaded from all over the Raleigh metro. The crew wraps and secures everything with mountain driving in mind, meaning tighter strapping and careful weight distribution.
For most 2-3 bedroom homes, we can load in the morning and deliver in Asheville that afternoon or early evening. Bigger homes with full packing may need a two-day setup.
What Asheville Looks Like on Delivery Day
Asheville's terrain adds variety to the delivery. Downtown has a mix of converted warehouses, newer apartment buildings, and lofts near the River Arts District with limited parking. West Asheville has hilly residential streets and bungalows. North Asheville near the Grove Park Inn has steep, winding driveways that sometimes can't fit a full-size truck. South Asheville near Biltmore Park is the most straightforward, with newer construction and wider streets.
We plan for the access at your specific address. If the driveway is too steep or narrow for our truck, we arrange shuttle loads with a smaller vehicle. We'd rather plan ahead than figure it out in the moment.
How We Price It
Raleigh to Asheville runs $2,000 to $5,000 for a 2-3 bedroom. Volume and packing are the biggest factors. You get exact dates and a firm price before booking. If you need to store between homes, your stuff stays in a sealed container at our Durham warehouse until you're ready. Call (919) 682-2300 or run the calculator below.
Moving from Asheville to Raleigh?
We do this move just as often. People come to Raleigh for tech jobs, for lower housing costs compared to Asheville's tight market, or because they want to be in a bigger metro with more options. Raleigh's downtown has really come into its own, with the Warehouse District, Glenwood South, and the expanding Moore Square area.
Raleigh neighborhoods that Asheville transplants tend to like include Oakwood and Mordecai for historic homes with character, Five Points for a walkable neighborhood feel, and North Hills for a more urban lifestyle. Families often head to Cary or Apex for schools and newer homes. Since we're based in Durham, delivering to Raleigh is a 30-minute drive for our crew. It's our backyard.
