790 Miles from the Loop to the Bull City
Seven hundred ninety miles. In a loaded truck, that's 2 to 3 days of transit. We typically route through Indianapolis on I-65 South, then pick up I-77 South through West Virginia and into North Carolina. Some loads take I-74 to I-77 instead. The best route depends on weather, time of year, and road conditions.
The Chicago end requires serious logistics, especially if you're in a high-rise. Buildings along Lake Shore Drive and in the Loop have strict moving windows, often weekdays only between 9 AM and 4 PM. Freight elevators need to be reserved. Loading docks have time slots. Your building management will want a certificate of insurance on file, usually two weeks before the move. We handle all of that.
If you're in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, or Logan Square, the buildings are smaller but the streets are tighter. Permit parking zones mean we may need a temporary no-parking sign from the city. Suburban moves from Evanston, Naperville, or Oak Park are more straightforward, with driveway access and fewer building rules.
And then there's timing. Chicago winters are no joke. A January move means cold temperatures, potential ice, and slower everything. It's doable. We've done it. But if you can choose your window, April through November is easier on everyone.
What You'll Find in Durham
The winters alone are worth the move. Durham gets some cold days, but nothing like Chicago cold. Snow is rare and melts fast. You'll still get seasons, including a fall that rivals anything in the Midwest, but without the five months of gray that Chicago dishes out.
The Triangle's tech scene is growing fast. Research Triangle Park sits between Durham and Raleigh, with over 300 companies in biotech, tech, and research. Duke University and Duke Health anchor Durham's economy. If you're leaving a corporate role in Chicago, the career opportunities here are real and multiplying.
Cost of living is where it really hits. A two-bedroom in Lincoln Park at $2,400 a month rents for $1,300 in Durham. Housing prices are about 40% lower across the board. You can buy a solid home in a good neighborhood for what a condo costs in Lakeview.
Neighborhoods to know: Trinity Park and Watts-Hillandale are close to Duke with tree-lined streets. Hope Valley is suburban with good schools. Downtown Durham has lofts, restaurants, and a walkability that feels like a smaller, warmer Wicker Park. And the food scene here is nationally recognized. You won't miss Chicago dining as much as you'd expect.
How the Process Works
Call us at (919) 682-2300 or request a quote through this page. We'll set up a virtual walkthrough of your Chicago home. We look at every room, the building access, the elevator situation, and how much you're bringing. Then we give you a firm price. One number, no surprises.
On move day, our crew shows up ready. Packing materials, furniture pads, the right equipment for your building. Everything gets loaded into a sealed container. That container travels from Chicago to Durham and doesn't get opened until we're inside your new place. One load, one unload. That's our one-touch system, and it's how we keep damage claims near zero.
We give you an exact delivery date. Two to three days after pickup, we're at your new door in Durham. Not "sometime this week." A specific day.
